AI Agent for Microbiologists

How to build an agent for microbiologists

You can assemble an agent that follows the cultures from plating to reading: incubation, colony counting, identification and strain registration. These pieces and steps are the starting point, and you assemble them on natuleadan.app, on another platform that connects your equipment, or with open-source pieces, without being tied to a vendor.

The agent works for the microbiology laboratory: the microbiologist decides which samples enter the follow-up and with which criteria, whether they are bacteria, fungi, viruses or other microorganisms. Tools with restricted access, such as the biobank or the laboratory’s record, are verified on demand when needed and may be subject to other terms and conditions.

How the agent works

The agent receives the incubation readings and the images of the plates, and compares them with the criteria configured for each type of sample. It decides whether to record the result or to escalate a finding for confirmation. When the culture calls for it, it stops and waits for the microbiologist’s indication before scheduling an additional test. Every reading is recorded with time, plate and result, and the history makes it possible to reconstruct any plating.

How to use the agent

With the equipment connected or manual upload enabled, your routine is to review the plate report, handle the escalated findings and adjust criteria, media and recipients when the protocol changes. The agent never identifies a microorganism on its own and always escalates the relevant finding. You can pause a line’s follow-up or remove it from the program without losing its history.

Which tools you can connect

Connecting these tools is not just pasting an API: every connector goes through a normalization process so the data arrives in the same format, and the connection type (API, webhook or file), the security rules and the backup are defined. Your team’s infrastructure also comes in: who manages the credentials, where the connector runs and how it is monitored.

In microbiology, the incubator, the colony counter and the strain record are connected, in addition to the notice channels to the microbiologist and the response team, which can be made of people or robots. The samples can be bacteria, fungi, viruses or other microorganisms, and each type uses the combination of tools that corresponds to it; when the case calls for it, microscopy and PCR are added to read images and confirm identifications, along with the periodic summaries that order the laboratory’s production.

The contents of the tools must meet the system’s parameters to be usable inside the application: data format, permissions and response times. Our application solves that connection; you can also assemble it with third-party programs or use the application online.
